about

My first electronic keyboard was a Yamaha PSS-140 when I was five years old. A few years later I got a PSS-470. A few years after that I first encountered what would become a very important instrument in my life: The Yamaha DX7-IIFD. I was obsessed with it - I carried the manual everywhere and read it all the time. I knew that synthesizer inside and out by the time I was 13.
My uncle ended up with that DX7-IIFD and it got traded around the family until it finally disappeared for good.

Fast forward to late 2021 - a friend that I'd been working with in the studio sold me a pair of Yamaha DX7-IID's, and reconnecting with that synth reignited that same passion that fueled my early years...It felt like going home after being on a long journey away.

I started collecting 80s and 90s Yamaha gear after that, grabbing anything I could get my hands on from that era. I ended up building an entire studio based around my (now very extensive) Yamaha collection and this set of music is the result.

There are virtually no overdubs on this recording; in most cases, a roomful of synths and drum machines were played back on a MIDI sequencer and mixed with analog and digital mixers from the late 80s, and from there recorded directly to a stereo mix.

I hope you enjoy this synthesized time capsule of ancient digital technology!
