about

I am pleased to present this collection of low-fidelity synth-drenched music! This was recorded after months of being away from my studio due to some difficult life situations, hence the title. As you can hear in these grooves, I was extremely inspired to spend some quality time with my studio gear once again.

"Mood Shifter" is presented in two versions which bookend the album.
This highlights how a different mood on a different day can send the same short musical motif in a completely new direction.

At the time of writing these notes, I am in the throes of a renewed passion for FM Synthesis. Yamaha FM synthesizers have been a part of my life since I was five years old. By the time I was 12, I could program a DX7 mkII like nobody's business. Over the years, my interest in these types of synths has waxed and waned. I sold off all my FM synths around 2017, but always missed them.
Recently I bought a pair of Yamaha DX7-IID synthesizers which you will hear all over this record. Many sounds that seem like samples or analog lead tones are from the DX.

This is a 100% hardware-based album. Logic was only used as a master clock to drive the drum machines, sequencers, and looper - all sounds were recorded and mixed directly to 4-track tape. Two tracks were used for the main mix, while the other two were used for the delay line.
The tape was then captured to Logic via a vintage Soundtracs mixing desk into a Universal Audio Apollo X16, then mastered in Logic and Adobe Audition.
